This is my 2011 art project: I'm going to attempt to do one drawing every day of the year. The drawings can be any medium, any size, any level of care and completion. I'm looking forward to seeing how my work evolves and improves, and whether this practice helps me to be more organized and "together" in the rest of my life pursuits.

August self-portrait

First of the month, self-portrait day, like it or not! I did this one with the charcoal powder toned paper (cream-colored pastel paper), eraser, and vine charcoal. I started with the ear, without planning the head out, and just erased and corrected with charcoal as I went along. There are problems, but I was overworking it, so I finally called a stop.

  1. Here you look sterner than I have ever seen you - and I know this is only the fierce concentration that doing a self-portrait requires - demands! And it is certainly a strong rendition. Good on you!

  2. Yes - I often think, looking at your self-portraits, that someday you are going to have to put a comedy on disc to play while you are working so the portrait can include the happy, funny, mischievous looks you more often wear.

  3. That's actually a good idea! I should put on a David Sedaris book - he always cracks me up.
